🍰 Food & Drinks term
Kaya
A sweet coconut and egg jam, often flavoured with pandan, famously spread on toast with butter.
Why it matters
Homemade kaya is usually made without preservatives, so it tastes fresher but keeps for a shorter time.
🇸🇬 In Singapore
Kaya toast with soft-boiled eggs and kopi is a classic Singapore breakfast. Small-batch kaya from home cooks and kopitiams often has no preservatives, so it should be kept in the fridge once opened.
Tips before you buy
- Refrigerate after opening.
- Use a clean spoon to make it last longer.
- Choose between pandan (green) and caramelised (brown) styles.
