💻 Electronics term
eSIM
A digital SIM built into your phone or watch. You activate a mobile plan by scanning a QR code or using your telco’s app, instead of inserting a plastic SIM card.
Common questions
Do Singapore telcos support eSIM?
Yes. The main telcos and many digital and budget mobile plans in Singapore offer eSIM, usually activated through their app or a QR code. Check that both your plan and your exact phone model support eSIM before switching.
Why use an eSIM when travelling?
You can buy an overseas data eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land, while keeping your Singapore number active for OTPs, bank SMS and calls. It saves hunting for a SIM card at the airport and is often cheaper than roaming.
Do all phones sold in Singapore support eSIM?
Most recent mid-range and flagship phones do, but some budget models and some parallel-imported versions do not. For example, phones made for certain overseas markets may only support two physical SIMs. Check the exact model and region before buying.
Why it matters
eSIM makes it easier to switch plans, run two numbers on one phone and get travel data, but moving it to a new phone takes a few extra steps.
🇸🇬 In Singapore
Many people in Singapore keep a local line for Singpass, banking OTPs and WhatsApp while adding a travel eSIM for trips. When changing phones, use your telco’s app or transfer feature, or contact them, rather than deleting the eSIM first.
Tips before you buy
- Check eSIM support for the exact phone model and region.
- Do not delete an eSIM until the new one is working.
- Keep your Singapore number active for OTPs when travelling.
