💻 Electronics term

Battery health

How much charge a battery can still hold compared with when it was new, usually shown as a percentage on phones and laptops.

Why it matters

A worn battery means less time between charges and can be expensive to replace, so it affects the true value of a used device.

🇸🇬 In Singapore

The Consumer Product Safety Office advises using the original or a certified charger and stopping use if a battery swells or overheats. When a battery reaches the end of its life, drop it at an NEA e-waste recycling point rather than in the rubbish chute.

Tips before you buy

  • Ask for a screenshot of the battery health reading.
  • Factor in replacement cost if health is low.
  • Do not buy a device with a swollen battery.
