💻 Electronics term
IMDA-approved
Telecommunication and wireless equipment, such as phones, routers and walkie-talkies, that has been registered with IMDA for sale and use in Singapore. Registered equipment carries an IMDA compliance label.
Common questions
What does IMDA-approved mean?
Telecommunication and radio equipment sold for local use in Singapore, including phones, Wi-Fi routers, TV boxes, walkie-talkies and many wireless gadgets, must be registered with IMDA by a licensed dealer. Registered equipment meets IMDA’s technical standards, works with Singapore’s networks and carries an IMDA compliance label.
What does "For export only, not approved for local use" mean?
Dealers must mark non-registered equipment this way. It may not work properly on Singapore networks, may lack local network bands or calling over 4G, or may interfere with other wireless signals. It is meant to be taken overseas, not used here.
Can I still use an old 3G-only phone?
Not for calls on local networks. Since Singapore’s 3G networks shut down, phones that are 3G-only or cannot make calls over 4G (VoLTE) are no longer registered for local use. Check VoLTE support before buying an older or overseas phone.
Why it matters
Buying IMDA-registered equipment means it should work properly with Singapore’s telcos and Wi-Fi rules, and you are buying from a licensed dealer.
🇸🇬 In Singapore
Cheap gadgets on overseas marketplaces are often not registered with IMDA. If a listing does not mention IMDA registration, or the product is marked for export only, think twice before buying it for local use.
Tips before you buy
- Look for the IMDA compliance label on the device, box or settings.
- Avoid items marked "For export only" for local use.
- Check VoLTE support on phones.
