🍰 Food & Drinks term

Fondant

A smooth, rollable sugar paste used to cover cakes and make decorations and figurines.

Why it matters

Fondant lets bakers create sharp shapes, characters and smooth finishes that buttercream cannot, which is why it is common on themed cakes.

🇸🇬 In Singapore

Singapore’s humidity can make fondant sticky or cause it to sweat when moved between air-conditioning and the outdoors. Keep fondant cakes in a cool room rather than straight out of the fridge into the heat.

Tips before you buy

  • Expect a higher price and longer lead time for detailed fondant work.
  • Keep fondant cakes away from humidity and direct sun.
  • Some people peel fondant off, so ask about the cake inside.
